A solid addition to the Dandelion Dynasty series。 There are plenty of light and funny moments mixed in with the dark and serious ones。 I love the inclusion of a high stakes cooking competition。

A

20-40% feels like a significant lull but other than that really compelling and continues the enthralling narrative

Great follow up to Wall of Storms, but doesn't quite hit the same peak。 It is half a book so I can understand how that could bother some people, but I think it was a good place to cut it。 Can't wait to see how Speaking Bones wraps up the series。 Great follow up to Wall of Storms, but doesn't quite hit the same peak。 It is half a book so I can understand how that could bother some people, but I think it was a good place to cut it。 Can't wait to see how Speaking Bones wraps up the series。 。。。more

Apparently this is one-half of a giant novel? Certainly looks like it, but I still enjoyed it。 It does make me wonder。。。was this book meant to be 2000 pages???

Sara Shocks

Possibly my favorite installment so far

I literally stayed up until 2am reading this and now I have one more book and I see that it’s 900+ pagesI just want my life back

Ken Liu says that this novel was meant to be the final installation, but that it just became too long (a la Christopher Paolini), and this book feels like a setup for an eventual epic conclusion。 I thought about rating it lower for this fact… but it was just so dang enjoyable。 It was wonderful to gain a bit more of a close up view of the various lands and cultures, and I loved the seemingly lower stakes that were intricately connected to the growing conflict。

i think this series might be the GOAT

Charlotte

This is the weakest of the 4…。

Lucas Avery

I really love this series。 The characters are great, the creative machinery is super interesting and the overall story is a blast。

3。5* I’m pretty sure that the cooking-contest-scene did not have to be 300+ goddamn pages long! it almost made me give up entirely… 😩 But that being said, even if this was not my favorite installment in this series, it’s still a masterful piece of literature and I’m still baffled by how Ken Liu has come up with all of these characters, the world-building and the events (based on real events in Chinese history)。 I also really love the gods playing a role in the story as well。 It was at times toug 3。5* I’m pretty sure that the cooking-contest-scene did not have to be 300+ goddamn pages long! it almost made me give up entirely… 😩 But that being said, even if this was not my favorite installment in this series, it’s still a masterful piece of literature and I’m still baffled by how Ken Liu has come up with all of these characters, the world-building and the events (based on real events in Chinese history)。 I also really love the gods playing a role in the story as well。 It was at times tough to get through but the ending did gave me hope for a spectacular last book! 。。。more

it's been awhile since I visited the Dandelion Dynasty but I love it now as much as I did back then, even if I can't clearly recall everything that went on before。 Liu creates a world so completely--he explores the political, social, and personal impacts invasion and colonialism has on the invaders, the enslaved, and those who lay outside the conflict but debate about whether or not to get involved。 The Asian-leaning "slik-punk" culture is also very detailed and so interesting。 Even a competitio it's been awhile since I visited the Dandelion Dynasty but I love it now as much as I did back then, even if I can't clearly recall everything that went on before。 Liu creates a world so completely--he explores the political, social, and personal impacts invasion and colonialism has on the invaders, the enslaved, and those who lay outside the conflict but debate about whether or not to get involved。 The Asian-leaning "slik-punk" culture is also very detailed and so interesting。 Even a competition between restaurants becomes fraught with mysteries, contraptions, wonders, and schemes in the hands of Liu。 Throughout the book Liu explores the question of language, what it is, how it is preserved or not how we communicate our stories or information and how that affects future generations。 Meanwhile, there are mysteries yet to be solved, alliances to be made, wars to be fought, and love to be rekindled。 This book may seem a bit of a build-up more。 than the actual event, but even when it lays down ground-work, it is still a fascinating read。 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 Ken Liu has such a way of making the reader care about the characters to the extent that I start to think of them as my friends。 When they're victorious, I celebrate their success and when they make mistakes, I groan inwardly。 I think I've said plenty in my reviews for the previous two books that apply here so I won't add much more。There is one point though which I'm inspired to address because of a video review by Bookborn (on YouTube)。 There is a lot of action and suspense around the story of Ken Liu has such a way of making the reader care about the characters to the extent that I start to think of them as my friends。 When they're victorious, I celebrate their success and when they make mistakes, I groan inwardly。 I think I've said plenty in my reviews for the previous two books that apply here so I won't add much more。There is one point though which I'm inspired to address because of a video review by Bookborn (on YouTube)。 There is a lot of action and suspense around the story of Thera and Timu but near the end of this book, Liu decides to focus on Fara, one of the princesses of Dara who, up till that point, did not have as much development nor a major role in the conflicts against Lyucu。 The story arc for her involves a cooking competition between a restaurant run by an old friend of her father, Kuni Garu (Emperor Ragin) and a restaurant owned by a unscrupulous business man who is, over time, revealed to be much dirtier and evil than they though, using underhanded tactics in the competition and trafficking humans as a part of his other businesses。At first, I thought this was a strange choice, to have this story arc so late in the book and not resolve the other stories。 But first, because Bookborn's review had told me of this arc, I was more patient than I would have been otherwise。 Secondly, this book and the next, Speaking Bones, are really supposed to go together and this is almost like a very long play/epic with several acts, many characters, and even some comedy relief。 There is enormous scope here and Liu is not rushing his story。 Moreover, earlier in the book, we read some very dark accounts of the Lyucu's heinous deeds。 Cutanrovo, for example, takes an infant and dips her head in a bucket of water in order to coerce the village people to acquiesce to her demands。 She speaks of roasting the child and feeding her flesh to one of the villagers。 Even after the villagers do what she demands, she decides to throw the child into a well anyways (ending her life), and then has every villagers older than 15 killed by fire while taking those younger as slaves (first castrating the boys)。 Liu does not try to sugarcoat barbarism committed on both sides of the conflict and sometimes, I think the reader could use some reprieve from such heavy content。So the cooking competition, with the humorous antics of the Blossom Gang and also the romance between Fara (Dandelion) and Kinri, is such a reprieve。 But one also begins to enjoy their story and root for Fara and Kinri to truly see each other for who they are and to confess the two secrets that they've been hiding。 The side story arc eventually becomes a main story arc and important moments occur, with one of them being that Kinri and Zomi realize they have the same father。I do also want to say that the heroism of Toof and Radia (Lyucu who joined the Darans and Agons) is extraordinary to me。 As they were fleeing Cudyu's forces, the children were on one garinafin and the warriors/adults on another。 Only Toof, Radia, and a few other adults were with the children。 It was clear that the children would slow down the other group。 But in an incredible gamble, Toof and Radia turned around and went towards the enemy。 Everyone else thought they had betrayed the group。 But in fact, in doing so, Cudyu had to spend half a day considering what to do with the children。 This gave the adults time to flee, when every second counted。 Moreover, they managed to convince Cudyu to let them bring the children back to HQ and on that trip back (the rest of the Lyucu warriors continued their hunt), they tricked the other guards into drinking too much and then helped the children escape。 In this whole process, they didn't reveal their plans to the children so that they would be hated authentically and convincingly。 If the children knew the plan, they probably wouldn't have played along well enough to convince Cudyu。 Thus, Toof and Radia sacrificed themselves and their reputation to save both parties at once。 At a crucial moment, they pretended to want the children killed, gambling that Cudyu would do the opposite of whatever they suggested since he hates being manipulated。 Thus, in a risky move of reverse psychology, they saved the children。 Lastly, they beat each other up so that it would appear like they were overpowered by the escapees。 Sadly, the Cudyu did not believe their stories and enslaved Toof and Radia。When reading this book, I recommend having Speaking Bones on hand to begin right away。 。。。more

I loved this book and the progression of the next generation of Dandelion dynasty characters! It was also fun to meet new characters, too。 My only complaint is that one particular side plot took up too much of the narrative and could have been edited down。

The interminable restaurant competition almost made me DNF the series after committing nearly 3000 pages, but I ended up skipping through chapters to get back to the actual story。 I'm just barely interested enough to finish the last book。 This book could have easily chopped out 300-400 pages and made it far more engaging。 The interminable restaurant competition almost made me DNF the series after committing nearly 3000 pages, but I ended up skipping through chapters to get back to the actual story。 I'm just barely interested enough to finish the last book。 This book could have easily chopped out 300-400 pages and made it far more engaging。 。。。more

Objectively, The Veiled Throne suffers from pacing issues and as a book isn't as strong as the first two books in the trilogy。 However, if you are in love with this series you are still likely to love almost every word in this volume。The book continues continues several years after The Wall of Storms end though the beginning introduces us to a new family, Lyucu Thane Goztan and her son Savo。 This gives us a picture of life in the Lyucu conquered parts of Dara。 Though Timu, now emperor Thake, has Objectively, The Veiled Throne suffers from pacing issues and as a book isn't as strong as the first two books in the trilogy。 However, if you are in love with this series you are still likely to love almost every word in this volume。The book continues continues several years after The Wall of Storms end though the beginning introduces us to a new family, Lyucu Thane Goztan and her son Savo。 This gives us a picture of life in the Lyucu conquered parts of Dara。 Though Timu, now emperor Thake, has achieved some help for his people, the conquered Dara people in the islands face horrific suppression。 Meanwhile in Pan, the Dara capitol, empress Jia is plotting her own schemes to save Dara while her son Phyro, the emperor in waiting believes that only a military solution can save Dara from the Lyucu。 We also learn that the Wall of Storms will reopen in a few years, leaving Dara little time to prepare before potential reinforcements arrive。The Veiled Throne is a very long book and like The Wall of Storms, the first half is very different from the second half。 The first half of the book focuses on the political developments in Dara, Lyucu conquered Dara, the Lyucu homeland in the north, and Thera's alliance with the Agon。 There's a wonderful sea battle following near the Wall of Storms with Thera's ships trying to escape the last surviving Lyucu ship。 Like the climactic battle in the previous book, this was also exciting and inventing with the author again using engineering and ingenuity to win the battle。But in the second half, the book shifts to focus on the young Princess Fara and the Lyucu exile Savo going by the Dara name Kinri。 Savo was educated in Dara history, language and culture and is able to pass as a native。 Fara is also living under the pseudonym Dandelion and both join a group called the Blossom Gang。 The help a restauranteur in series of cooking competitions that take up huge swaths of the storyline。 While this is an unorthodox choice, these chapters are still amazingly fun to read。 The downside is the larger macroscopic plot grinds to a halt to develop this storyline and the characters of Fara and Savo, who are likely important figures in the final book。 I'd say the one critique I had of this book is that I think Timu and Phyro are really underdeveloped characters considering their station。 I also would have liked to see more of Jia in this book, though her plans are still kept hidden from the reader。 However, there is so much about this book that is exceptional that it far outweighs any small criticisms I have。I know the author had planned books 3 & 4 to be one book, but they are simply too long and had to be split。 I think the book ended on an appropriate note all things considered, but it doesn't feel like a finished story。 It's like the book ended in Act 2, but you still need Acts 3 & 4 to feel fully satisfied。 This isn't the book's fault and I'm glad the author is taking his time。 If you love worldbuilding, you'll love this book and this series。 I felt completely immersed in this world。 I loved the discussions on language, art, and culture。 The author clearly has respect for different ways of expression for both written and performed and understands the advantages and weaknesses of each。 Liu is a talented writer and has a gift for making a world come alive。I had planned on waiting a bit to read the final book, but given the ending, I feel it's necessary to read books three and four back-to-back。 to get the full experience。 These are gargantuan books (almost 80 hours of audiobook combined), but The Dandelion Dynasty is among the best fantasy series I've read and I can't complain about delving into more of a great thing。 。。。more

I've been enjoying this series a lot; the world building, th intrigue, the characters, the nuance。。。 so much to love! While this book continues these traditions set down by the previous, it felt a little lighter in plot than the others, and felt a bit like a filler book。 This isn't really a complaint, because there is a lot accomplished in this book that was necessary, but it did seem to lack some of the excitement and overall progress that the first 3 had, and I'm pretty sure it's because Liu n I've been enjoying this series a lot; the world building, th intrigue, the characters, the nuance。。。 so much to love! 3。75 The political scheming, battles and character development are incredible as always with The Dandelion Dynasty。 They might’ve even been my favourite in the series here, but the final couple hundred pages really drag。 I might update my score once I finish Speaking Bones as this is part 1 of 2 which definitely might’ve had an impact on the flow。
